Tips for Learning

Get HSC Ready with an Exam Audit

You’ve just finished all of your Year 11 Preliminary exams (congratulations!)  and now your HSC “year” has begun.

How did you go in Year 11?

What are the lessons you’ll take into Year 12 to be as successful as you can?

The is the beginning of the last 12 months of your time at school, here’s a great tip I’ve used with my students over many years to take full advantage of your Year 11 learnings and not let anything go to waste.

A short exam audit is just the thing to draw a line in the sand of your preliminary courses before you gear up for the HSC. Year 11 was a practice year – your teachers were providing you with tips and assignments that were to get you ready for Year 12, so how do you do it?

Decide on a time to start your exam audit.

Start with your favourite subject

Search and locate all of your exams and assignments for the year for this subject. Yes, this may involve searching through piles of paper, you may now regret the chocolate bar you ate when you find the banana at the bottom of the bag of paper. It’s dirty work but it must be done!

Use the template Exam Audit to review the results from this subject.

Now go to a subject you found hard this year. Do this again. Repeat this for all of your subjects over the coming days so you have a good idea of where to from here for HSC success.

If you did well in your subjects you want to know why (the “it”) so you can keep doing “it” and start doing “it” in other subjects.

If you didn’t do well in a subject you need to work out why and stop doing things that aren’t helping and start doing something different.

Let me know how this goes for you in the comment section below.
